Ananda Shankar was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She started learning the dance at a young age under the guidance of Smt. Sharada Keshava Rao.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=The Power of Dance )〕 She received her training from many masters such as Shri KN Pakkiriswamy Pillai, S Sharada, Krishnaveni Lakshman, Padma Balagopal and Dr Shankara Menon. She completed her MA, M. Phil and Ph.D from Osmania University. She has also done her diploma and postgraduate diploma in Bhartanatyam Course from Rukmini Devi Arundale’s Kalakshetra. She spent six years at Kalashetra to learn more of Bharatnatyam, Veena, Carnatic Music, Dance Theory and Philosophy etc.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Her Biography )〕 After perfecting the art of Bharatanatyam, she started learning Kuchipudi under the guidance of master Sri Pasumarthy Ramalinga Shastry. She was diagnosed to have cancer in the year 2008 but as per her words, it didn't take her away from her dance.
